Underground Strips 2009-11

Created as filler between the last days of Uni and Genma, I took several potshots into the London Underground scene and embraced the toilet humour of associated peers from the Alternative Small Press. Collected Comic Madness 1 and 2 was an assortment of comics knocked out during the cheap photocopier era before professional print. It was as the title implied; a merging of short-lived ideas in my sketchbook into one shared, comedy-intended package.

Rock Diggler and his friend Sully was originally a dig at the Hentai genre but matured in part of the process. Incubiman was going to be a horror-based superhero of mine but he was turned into a reformed religious man coping with his urges with little help from Rock. Shiki Logan entered the fray from Tytronitek city (here portrayed as American even though she's Russian in current canon). A few years have passed since her fight with Chimera and she's presented here quite voluptuously. Later it was established that they're all part of the same Genma Visage universe, much to their demise.

The Maud vs Betyu short was later reworked into the chapter "Maud takes on Big Wong" in Book 0 Part 1. Before that, a post-apocalyptic concept was entertained for Maud by which she would serve as a bounty hunter of anime-warped foes. Also shown is concept art for a Zulie Zerpent spinoff concept regarding her origins. I'll instead be letting the Genma series take care of that arc in due time.

The short "Farewell to Mistress Ocean" was done for an newspaper art competition, pretty much my last misfire into such black holes. It was based on the London riots in the Summer of 2011 and likewise takes a swipe at the system that lets these things happen while dangerously choosing friends and foes, themes that were later touched upon on the sideline in the Shemsu-Hor saga.

Rock Diggler and Incubiman's adventures are semi-canon to Genma Visage, mostly told from a whimsical perspective. It's recently been explained that they're meant to be sentient Youkai living by choice who integrated with society through loopholes and favours, by which Dr Chimera played a part in their creation. Presently, the other characters shown specifically in Incubiman's art are not in the current canon, but this may change. The traits in the tanned pretty lady for example may have since gone into Usheana, Relicia and Lumriya.

The recent addition of "Road Rage in Leeds" was done for the October 2012 Leeds Zine fair that I first discovered at the Alternate Press Fair in Summer London 2012. It was hastily drawn on a coach the day before the event so that it could be photocopied and distributed to visitors as was the Fair's tradition. It represents my peak of the whacky anatomy phase but keeps within the flavour of other surreal submissions from other exhibitors nevertheless. Is this story canon to Genma Visage? I guess so.
